Talk prior to reading about the title of the book, the blurb on the back of the book and what you can see on the cover illustrations. Once you have finished reading a book together, try hunting for familiar high frequency words in the text. Make a simple Concentration game by writing the words on index cards (a pair for each word). Making the words from Scrabble letters, pipe cleaners, letter magnets on the fridge or the letters from an alphabet puzzle. Your child’s teacher may send home flash cards, spelling homework or other activities involving sight words.
Go on a sound hunt, finding items from around your home that begin with the letter sound they are learning about. Open up a word processing document, change the font to a large type setting and let your child have fun finding and typing letters on the computer. Write letters on the path in chalk and invite your child to jump on the letter that correctly corresponds with the initial sound in a word you say. Make letter shapes from playdough or cooked spaghetti, or draw with fingers in shaving cream on the shower screen during bath time.
